Michael & Marisol Wedding

Michael and Marisol pose for a photo at Heritage Park in Cerritos, Calif., during their wedding day on Saturday August 21, 2010.

Classic would be the best word to describe Michael and Marisol’s wedding. From the red bricks of Our Lady of Victory church, to Michael’s Marine Corps dress uniform, to the classic car, this wedding could have taken place in the 1950′s.

One of the best things about shooting a traditional Hispanic wedding is the food! Home cooked birria, rice, beans, bolillo bread, and horchata… who needs a caterer?

Michael and Marisol were great to work with, making my job easy. I always get satisfaction out of documenting a couple’s big day, whether it be photos of the kiss or photos of the emotion on their family and friends’ faces.

Michael & Marisol Engagement

Michael and Marisol pose for a photo on the Palos Verdes Peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., on Friday, July 23, 2010.

I had the pleasure to photograph Michael and Marisol for their engagement shoot at the stunning Palos Verdes Peninsula. Strangely enough, I’ve never actually visited the west side of the peninsula next to Redondo Beach, even though I grew up and lived in the Los Angeles area all of my life. So, it was a first for the three of us… their first time in front of a camera and my first time at this beautiful nook of classic So Cal cliff and ocean.

As I explained to Michael and Marisol, the engagement shoot is a perfect way for a couple, who has never been in front of a camera, to loosen up and have a better idea of what to expect for the actual wedding day. They quickly realized how fun and easy it is to work with me and to get great results in the process.

Shoots like this on a perfect, sunny day remind me of how much I love living and working where I do. I closed my eyes, let the salty air hit my nostrils, and heard nothing but the waves crashing on the rocks. I almost didn’t need a camera.

Marc & Christina Engagement

Marc and Christina share an underwater kiss at UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif., on Saturday, July 3, 2010.

It was the coolest engagement photo shoot I’ve ever been a part of. Marc and Christina’s underwater photo shoot was tons of fun, but also pretty challenging and physically demanding.

I teamed up with fellow photographer Jeff Lewis to shoot a couple who share a passion for water polo and wanted some unique engagement photos. It was a good thing that we worked together as we quickly found out that taking nice pictures underwater is harder than it seems.

Unlike a conventional photo shoot on dry land, you can’t give directions to your subject and everyone’s limited to how long they can hold their breath. Each dive was about 30 seconds of trial and error, but the end results were pretty awesome!

We both came away with some nice images and sore bodies. Marc and Christina were troopers, putting up with burning, chlorinated eyes and the constant “Ok, that was great. Let’s do it one more time!”

Sergio and Brasilia Wedding

Brasilia poses for a photo during her wedding reception at Quiet Cannon Country Club in Montebello, Calif., on Saturday, May 29, 2010.

I knew I was in store for a unique wedding when I met Brasilia for the first time and thought, “What a unique name!” It was a quaint ceremony at a small church in Los Angeles, and an equally charming reception at a banquet hall in Montebello. Brasilia was a breathtaking bride, and I had a great time photographing her wedding, from the traditional church ceremony, to their family and friends on the dance floor.

I worked out a custom package for Sergio and Brasilia, who were on a budget but still wanted quality photography to document their special day. Although I did not photograph the bride and groom’s getting ready process, my photojournalism-style coverage of the ceremony and reception still told the story perfectly.

Mike & Liz Wedding

Mike and Liz pose for a photo at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., on Sun, April 11, 2010.

This was my first golf club wedding and the Palos Verdes Golf Club is one of the best in the area for sweeping views and lush scenery. As the day unfolded, I had a gut feeling that the overcast skies would break open a little and let some warm sunlight stream in for the ceremony. My weather prediction was right!

Mike and Liz put together a great wedding that went off without a hiccup. Every detail, from the floral arrangements to the parting gifts, made their ceremony and reception unique. Once the day began, I worked my photojournalist magic, allowing me to catch some great candid moments.

The diffused sun made the light nice and pretty for portraits on the golf course. It gave the photos a soft and moody feel, and made it unnecessary to use my flash. It was a recipe for stylized yet classic wedding photos… it didn’t hurt that they picked such a gorgeous place.
