Matthew + Rachel Wedding: Elk’s Lodge, San Pedro

Matthew and Rachel pose for a photo at Averill Park in San Pedro, CA, on Jan. 16, 2010.

There’s no question that I had a blast shooting Matthew and Rachel’s wedding. The day started off early at Rachel’s house, where she got ready with her friends/bridesmaids. Sometimes it’s challenging to have eight or nine women in one room put their guard down in order to take genuine, candid photos. But the photojournalist in me came out, and they forgot I was there after a short while, allowing for some nice shots.

The ceremony was a traditional catholic wedding at St. Cyprian Church in Lakewood, CA. Luckily for me, the church had a huge skylight above the altar that let some beautiful light stream through. It also had a choir balcony where I was able to mount a remote camera to photograph the ceremony from above and below simultaneously. I pride myself in being able to make gorgeous ceremony photos in any environment, whether it be a beach wedding, a huge chapel, a resort, or small neighborhood church.

The bridal party migrated to Averill Park in San Pedro, CA, for photos. It was the perfect time of day, as the sun was setting behind palm trees and rolling hills. The reception down the street at the Elk’s Lodge in San Pedro, CA, was just as fun as any reception I’ve shot so far. Over 200 friends and family members came to congratulate the couple, who looked like they had the time of their life.
